CALL TO ACTION IN SUPPORT OF SHEPERD COMMUNITIES

THE ISRAELI HUMAN RIGHTS NGO TORAT TZEDEK-THE TORAH OF JUSTICE IS IN URGENT NEED OF SUFFICIENT ISRAELI AND INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE THAT THERE WILL BE AT LEAST 10 HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS 24/7 PROVIDING PROTECTIVE PRESENCE IN EACH OF THE SHEPHERDING COMMUNITIES THAT ARE THREATENED AND TRERRORIZED DAILY.

It is not words that are most important, but action (Pirkei Avot 1:17) There are moments in history when it is not sufficient to speak out or demonstrate. We must defend fellow human beings with our bodies.

Registration for Israeli Volunteers

Professor Fleishacker spent part of this June engaging in protective presence. He writes:"I volunteered with Torat Tzedek this past June, in a community threatened by settlers (Mukhmas Beduin), and saw with my own eyes both how important this work is, and how very difficult it is to gather enough volunteers to do it. Settlers came to harass the Beduin in Mukhmas every day - sending their flocks into sheds to eat fodder that the Bedouins had stored, going into the Bedouins' houses, putting stones on the road to where they lived, cutting their water main - even when activists from Torat Tzedek were present. Worse things (beatings, setting fire to cars) happened when we were not around. And throughout, the army rarely responded to calls for help; the police almost never did. Yet there were generally just three or four of us: not enough to be helpful when any large number of settlers came through. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to increase the pool of volunteers, or how valuable the work of these volunteers can be."

There are a number of shepherd communities and even villages along the upper Allon Road in the Ramallah District which need 24/7 protection of at least 2-3 HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS,  but would be much more secure if we were present in larger numbers.

We have set as a goal bringing at least creating a brigade of rights defenders from abroad to join beleaguered and outnumbered Israelis.

Human rights defenders will document, try to call Israeli security forces when palestinians request, and when necessary stand between the communities and those threatening them..

Volunteers must understand that protective presence is potentially dangerous. We will accept appropriate volunteers for any amount of time, but we are particularly looking for those who are prepared to be with us for longer periods of time for the sake of  human rights, human decency and justice.

Some of you saw our previous call specifically to protect the violently expelled Wadi a Seeq community in an attempt to return in September. The community requested to postpone this because of a rise in violence and because the Israeli High Court has scheduled an additional hearing on our petition on November 5th. Just maybe the strong words we write to the court will bring a out a willingness to order what is really needed to increase the chances for a safer and successful return.
